How do I keep my beard clean?

Is your beard dirty or down-right clean?

The age-old question of whether beards are a virile symbol of health or a breeding ground for dirt and bacteria continues to spark discussion amongst hipsters, fashionistas, and health experts alike. Like most debates, the answer lies somewhere in the middle, but with a strange ability to tip one way or the other depending on your habits.

Why is a beard seen as healthy?

Natural Protection: Facial hair can act as a natural barrier against harmful UV rays, preventing skin damage and reducing the risk of skin cancer. Additionally, a beard can help retain moisture, keeping the skin underneath hydrated and preventing dryness.  On top of all of that, a beard is a great winter barrier to the bitter cold of winter and the damage it can do to your skin.

Reduced Infections: Some studies suggest that beards may help reduce the risk of infections by acting as a filter for airborne particles, such as dust and allergens. This is particularly beneficial for individuals with allergies or respiratory issues.

Psychological Benefits: One of the top benefits reported by beard growing is a boost confidence and self-esteem.  In an age where taking care of your mental health has become a priority issue among men, it's a benefit that can be taken lightly.  Beyond that, a sense of pride, identity and self-expression also make the list of positive health attributes.

But who's kidding who, beards can get gross.

Bacterial Breeding Ground: Beards can harbour bacteria, dirt, and other contaminants. The dense hair follicles provide an ideal environment for the accumulation of food particles, sweat, and oils, potentially leading to skin issues and infections.

Potential for Skin Issues: Some individuals may experience irritation or acne beneath their beards due to the accumulation of oils and dead skin cells which can happen if you're not adhering to proper beard hygiene.

Transmission of Germs: Given the facts from #1, concerns arise about the potential for beards transmit germs. From healthcare to food service, there are industries where those germs are going to be a problem if they spread.

So how do you tip the scales?

This is a case of both things being true at the same time.  Ultimately, the health of a beard depends on the individual's grooming habits and personal hygiene. Regular cleaning, trimming, and moisturizing can contribute to a healthy and attractive beard. The key is finding a balance that works for each individual, recognizing that a well-maintained beard can be a symbol of both health and style. So, whether you're team beard or team clean-shaven, the choice is yours, and the responsibility lies in maintaining the health and cleanliness of your facial hair.
